One of the most popular Broadway shows of the last ten years is Wicked, a story that takes the familiar Wizard of Oz storyline and turns it completely on its head. Few other musicals over the past few years have struck such a cord with so many people. The story of Wicked revolves around the lives of two of the main characters from The Wizard of Oz. As we all know from the famous book and film, there are three witches in Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West, The Good Witch Glenda and the unfortunate witch that Dorothy kills when she first arrives in Oz. Wicked takes this set up and runs with it, expanding on the reasons why each witch ended up the way they did and looking at the sisterly relationships the three of them had with each other. The story mainly focuses on the relationship between Glenda, the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, going into hilarious detail about their lives as children and how our perceptions of what is good and evil might not be completely accurate. In the end, Wicked is a song filled and laugh inducing joyride that will have you reevaluating your perceptions of The Wizard of Oz for years to come. Since Wicked first debuted, there have been no less than eight major professional productions, with more on the way. The musical has garnered critical praise, as well, has won a Tony award, a slew of Drama Desk awards, an Outer Critics award for best musical, and a Grammy for its amazing soundtrack. It is very seldom that a single production garners this much positive press and so little negative, and the feedback from the general public has been even more adoring. The entire production is filled with beautiful original music that helps to build the characters more than just simple dialogue ever could. Seeing Wicked in person is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and it shouldn't be missed by any fan of The Wizard of Oz or of musical theatre.
