Ways to Kick the Depression That Comes with a Break Up

Depression is a natural emotion to feel after the break up of a relationship. However, there are ways you can get through those negative emotions and onto the right path to heal. Many people who go through the ending of a long time together with his or her significant other have a really touch time getting through this type of problem. It takes months, even years to get over this type of pain for some people. However, following a few simple guidelines, you may be able to make your stay at the Heart Break Hotel a little shorter. For example, taking time out for yourself, eating right and staying healthy, and getting a social life can help you put the past where it belongs – in the past.

One of the best things you can do after a break up is taking a little time out for yourself. Basically, take a break. Your break may take a few days, but get some relaxing time in for you. Listen to some comforting music. Take a hot bath and relax. Spend the day reading or watching movies. Try something that will get your mind off of your problems and just spend some time getting to know you again.

Another way to get rid of that depressed feeling you get after the typical break up is to make sure you eat right and stay fit. Many times, ice cream, cake, cookies, and other sweet treats are comforting at the time. But, all of these sugars and caffeine, while giving you energy and comfort for an instant, often later drain you of energy, not to mention add anxiety and tension. These are things you definitely do not need to add to the pot when trying to get over the demise of a relationship. Drinking alcohol is sometimes used as a comfort as well. However, alcohol is a depressant and though you may want to forget the problems you are having, they all come crashing back to reality with a hangover once you are sober. This is just an added stress and will not alleviate your problems.

Staying healthy also includes plenty of regular exercise. While it can be very tempting to stay in bed all the time, force yourself to get up and go out for a jog or go to the gym. Swimming is great exercise too. Besides taking out your frustrations on a punching bag, endorphins are released when you exercise. These are stress-reducing chemicals that are released when you exercise, making you feel better.

Finally, a last thing to do to get over depression caused by heart ache is to get out there and get back into the social crowd. Use your friends as shoulders to cry or lean on. They have probably all been dumped at one time or another in their lives, use their experiences to help get through yours. Share a hug with a friend. This seems small but the gesture can be so huge at times of need.

All of these small steps can go such a long way in making you feel better, in making your life seem a little brighter in a dismal time. Taking a break to get to know yourself, staying active and healthy, and leaning on a social support group are all great ways to get around this pain of a break up.
