Taking part in vending machine theft isn't right, and you can end up with a criminal record for it. To you, this may just be a petty issue but to the person that is paying for the vending machines and what goes into them, there is nothing small about the situation. They don't understand why society thinks it should be acceptable though. People just don't realize the overall effect that it has though.
Some people find it very simple to steal from a machine. They don't feel it is the same thing as taking something from a person. Yet they are stealing from the person that owns that particular vending machine. Even if you don't feel it is your fault because you got extra items or your money back and the item, it is taken what you aren't entitled to. Try to call the owner of the vending machine or at least post a note on the machine for them to find.
On the other side of that, many of us have also dealt with a vending machine taking our money and not getting anything in return for it. This may lead to a person thinking they are justified in getting something from such a machine for free later on. It doesn't matter that it is a different machine or that it is owned by someone else.
People often think it is no big deal that they got a product for free from manipulating a vending machine. Some people put in coins on a string so they can use them again. Yet each time they do this, they are taking money out of the pocket of the person that owns the machine. It may be on a smaller scale but the concept is no different than one who takes all the money inside of a given vending machine for their own use.
For those that own vending machines, the fear of being the victim of such crimes is real. They can lose a great deal of money when you take all of the various times it happens into consideration. They may find the only way to recoup some of that loss is to charge everyone more money for what they buy at the vending machines they own.
Many owners of vending machines are cracking down on theft too. They have invested too much in their business to stand by silently and allow it to happen. They are tired of being taken advantage of. Some types of action that they have taken include installing video cameras and alarms.
The fact that there aren't any people there when you make the purchase doesn't make it any different. If you won't take merchandise from the corner store, then you shouldn't be doing it from a vending machine either. This type of theft needs to stop because it isn't right and it isn't fair.
Stealing is a crime regardless of if it takes place on a small scale or a big one. Keep that in mind if you are ever tempted to engage in such activities. It is important to report instances of vending machine theft too instead of just ignoring them. If you see it being done or hear someone bragging, report it to the authorities.
