Relaxing in front of the television or just sitting down in the lounge chair, you experience a sudden gushing feeling or burning in your upper abdomen. This radiates up into your chest and your esophagus, accompanied by a sour taste in the mouth. Wondering, what this condition is all about?
This condition, where stomach acid travels from the stomach to the esophagus, is what is know as acid reflux and acid reflux and diet are connected to one another.
GERD is a very common and typical condition wherein the liquid content of the stomach refluxes into the esophagus. This causes irritation and inflammation to the lining of the esophagus.
Common causes may include the following:
* The Lower Esophageal Sphincter or LES is related to acid reflux because it is the valve that keeps the stomach acid in the stomach. When it is weak or damaged it is not be able to perform its task of keeping the gastric juices in place and acid reflux occurs.
* Certain foods are contributory factors to the weakening of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter. Examples of these are chocolates, spicy foods, fatty foods, tomatoes and tomato-based products and drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol.
* Certain conditions like smoking, pregnancy and obesity are contributing factors to GERD as well as lifestyle choices such as meal consumption shortly before bedtime or wearing tight fitting clothes.
In order to minimize the occurence of GERD it is advisable to eat small amount of foods at frequent intervals instead of one big meal. Large meals are likely to lead to more bouts of painful acid reflux making you feel irritable. Everyday large consumption of fatty and spicy foods and chocolates should also be avoided. If you are worried about acid reflux, watch what you eat and choose only mild, and easy to digest food in moderate amounts.
