Understanding Cancer In Labradors

This Pets and Animals Article is Brought To You By - Richard Cussons

Their excellent detection and working skills are what made Labradors popular. Countries like Unites States and Australia have been using the services of Labradors as assistance dogs. It is important to keep these dogs healthy especially if they are expected to do a lot of work.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in people around the world. Unfortunately, the same thing happens among dogs. Cancer is responsible for many deaths of your canine friends especially those who are already of age. It is therefore proven as serious problem concerning humans and dogs alike.

Cancer is considered as an immune dysfunction disease because it occurs when the immune system fails to work properly. The dog's body is made up of millions of cells. Out of these millions of cells, some of it must have errors in replication. Toxins, radiation, congenital disease and age help increase these errors. This is where cancer started.

When the immune system failed to recognize that error in replication, the abnormal cell will replicate itself. It will keep on replicating but the presence of tumor can not be felt after a few days or even months of the growth. The tumor goes on growing until such time that it is large enough for vets to detect.

Detecting or diagnosing cancer can be difficult but there are signs to watch out for. These signs include bloated abdomen, presence of blood or mucous in the feces or urine, constipation, diarrhea, difficulty in urinating or defecating and sudden loss of weight.

Many people become hopeless once cancer is diagnosed. It is because of the fact that there is still no specific drug known to completely kill the tumor and treat cancer. There are some methods used to alleviate the problem however. These methods are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, essential in reducing tumors. Ways to combat cancer is not only limited to reducing tumors. The most effective solution is to trigger the dog's immune system to respond. Overcoming cancer is at greater risk when the recognition response is triggered.

Cancer results from the combined effects of genetics, physical and chemical carcinogens. In breeding, breeders should always make sure that only healthy and disease-free dogs should be included in the breeding process. Dog owners and care takers should also check the contents of the foods they are giving their Labradors. It should be nutritious and free from cancer-causing chemicals.
