Tune the Guitar Right, Play the Guitar Right

Make better use of your time with audio books
Audio books were first used as long ago as 1932, when the American Federation for the Blind produced a gramophone record which ran at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute. A 12-inch LP (long playing) record had a playing time of about 22 minutes a side, so a book of 60,000 words could be recorded on 8 or 9 double-sided twelve-inch dis... Read more

Tune the Guitar Right, Play the Guitar Right

This Arts Article is Brought To You By - Lyd M.

Many guitarists that are just starting out will find guitar tuning to be difficult. Guitars are only properly tuned at the factory. Once outside the factory, the wood that makes up the guitar will start to lose its shape slowly due to forces of nature like expansion and contraction. The guitar strings will start to loosen up. Therefore, ensure that you tune your guitar properly before you carry on with your guitar practice. Here are some tips that will ease guitar tuning for you.

1. Cultivate guitar tuning habit

Guitar tuning can be a hassle but you must make it a habit. This will ensure that your guitar sounds pitch right and will enable you to pick up on the little mistakes that you have made. You can then improve on these mistakes. Tune your guitar every time you pick it up. I cannot emphasize enough on it.

2. Piano

There are many ways to correctly tune your guitar. One of these ways is by using a piano. A piano is able to provide the correct sounding note. For example, let's say that you are trying to tune the E string on your guitar. You play the E note on the piano and strike the E string on your guitar. Compare the two sounds and adjust your guitar strings by tightening or loosening them. Once you think the note E sounds the same, you do the same for all the other strings. This is tuning by ear. If you use this method, you need to use your judgment.

3. Use a tuner

Another way is to use a battery operated tuner. Start off with the Low E, which is the thickest string on the guitar. Strike the string and adjust the tightness of the string with the tuning peg until the green light shines. Do the same until the G string. This is where you match the B string with the 4th fret of the G string. Once you have managed to do the same for all the six strings, you have successfully tuned your guitar. If your guitar has a tremolo bridge, always remember that each string that you tune will go down in pitch as you tune the next string.

Before you carry out any warm up on your guitar, ensure that you tune your guitar correctly. This is a vital step and should not be skipped in your rush to play the guitar. You may not notice it in the beginning but once you diligently tune your guitar, your ear will become trained enough to distinguish the right pitch. This will further assist you in your guitar playing.
