It used to be that if you visited your local needlework shop you may have found a few sheets on the counter from the big manufacturers containing some free counted cross stitch patterns. Now with the internet, it is much easier for both the designer and the stitcher to find each other.
What is the best way to find these patterns? Many can be found by using a search engine or you can look on free cross stitch patterns sites. Using Google or some other search engine, type in "free counted cross stitch patterns" or "cross stitch freebies," and you'll be amazed at the number of hits you will find, more than you'll ever need.
There are plenty of sites on the Internet that only provide free craft patterns, including ones that only have cross stitch patterns. They are often sorted by subject, skill level or technique and many are using the new technology of RSS feeds to keep you updated when new patterns are added.
Manufacturers give their work away for free to hopefully see the quality of their products and make you more likely to buy one of their kits that is for sale. If you can easily do the work, you will more likely buy from them in the future.
Thread manufacturers also offer free patterns that use their speciality fibres. They can give you ideas and guidelines for making the most of the threads and encourage you to purchase a few colours to try out.
Remember, although these patterns are offered freely, the designers still hold the copyright. They are not free for you to make money from, after all the designer themselves aren't! If you stitch for charity, it may well be worth asking the designer for permission to stitch a limited number in order to raise funds. I am usually agreeable to this as long as I am asked and the stitcher doesn't intend to make hundreds of items.
One of the best reasons to try free counted cross stitch patterns is that they allow you to experiment and try a new technique or stitch that you might not have attempted if you had to pay for it. All you need to get started are supplies, a computer, printer and lots of spare time.
