It seems like everyone has their own surefire home remedy for treating stretch marks, from cocoa butter, to vitamin E, to Retin-A. But, while these topical treatments might have some effect, many people are looking for faster, more dramatic results.
Many have found that some cosmetic procedures can help to drastically diminish the depth and appearance of stretch marks. And here are three of the most common.
Try Microdermabrasion
A microdermabrasion usually takes less than an hour. During the procedure, dead skin cells, including skin with color imperfections, are removed from the surface of the skin. As a result, stretch marks may be smoother and less visible.
Another benefit of microdermabrasion, besides the speed with which it can be done, is the lack of recovery time. You can leave the doctor's office, and continue going on about the rest of your day.
You Could Also Try Laser Scar Reduction
Stretch marks are actually scars. And laser scar reduction (sometimes called "laser scar removal") can reduce the appearance of scars by anywhere from 50 to 80 percent.
During the procedure, a laser is moved across the scarred area. This laser removes the top layer of skin, revealing another layer of skin. This newly revealed skin layer will heal and regenerate, and scarring won't be as pronounced. The result is that stretch marks won't be as deep, and their pink, purple or red color will be dramatically reduced.
Chemical Peels Can Also Be Beneficial
A chemical peel can both reduce or eliminate the skin discolorations associated with stretch marks, and make the scars less deep and visible.
During the treatment, a solution that contains acid (like trichloroacetic acid or glycolic acid) is applied to the area. This solution removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. It also generates the production of new, healthy skin cells.
A chemical peel will both reduce the discoloration of your stretch marks, and make them less deep and noticeable.
Recovery time for a chemical peel depends on whether you have a light, medium, or deep peel. With a light peel, you can be out and about in just a few hours, although you will have to take precautions, like wearing sunscreen. With a deep peel, your doctor might recommend you stay home and rest for several weeks.
If you are looking for the best way of treating stretch marks, there are many options. After considering them all, you might decide that either microdermabrasion, laser scar reduction, or a chemical peel is the right option for you.
