The lake was primarily built to pump water into two aqueducts, but it has since become a popular recreational lake as well. In 1962 when it was discovered that heavy traffic was sinking the bridge it was sold at auction to Robert McCullock who founded Lake Havasu. The bridge was then moved to the lake and reassembled. The bridge now connects the city on the shore of the lake to a island that features a resort, restaurants and a golf course. If you prefer to watch water sports then you can view many competitions and exhibits year round at Lake Havasu. The most popular is the International Jet Sport Association's World Finals. This is an annual event that is compared to the Super Bowel of personal watercraft and jet ski racing.
