If you can tear yourself away from the beach, here are the five top sights or places to visit on your holiday in the Costa de la Luz:
1. A day on the coastlines capital, Cadiz. There are so many sights to see you could visit the Cathedral, Cadiz Museum (free entrance) which is full of Phoenician and Roman Archaeology, the Admirals House, the Ancient Ruins and climb up to the observation tower. Or a simple amble around for the day, eating at the exquisite restaurants, shopping, and picking up the odd souvenir. The market in Cadiz is weekly on a Monday from 10am-2pm.
2. Jerez (in English Sherry) is a great days sightseeing on your holiday to the Costa de la Luz. Named after its main export; sweet sherry your first port of call should be the local vineyard to pick up some of the best sherry you have ever tasted. Jerez is a striking city, and there is an abundance to do, you could go and watch a flamenco dance and visit the flamenco museum. Or visit the royal equestrian centre and see the fine white horses perform their amazing artistic movements. There is also the clock museum, and the botanical gardens.
3. Arabic baths; recently opened to the public the historical Arabic baths are now a great way of combining cultural and historical sightseeing with pampering! Open from 10am till 10pm you can go with your swim suit, relax in the baths (there are hot, and cold) and you could even have beauty treatment such as a massage, or facial. This is a real treat, a top choice on a ‘girl’s only’ holiday!
4. Aqualand Bahia Water Park. No family holiday in Spain is complete without a trip to the water park! The Aqualand Bahia is in the town of El Puerto de Santa Maria. Open from June till September from 11am-6pm (and longer hours in August) there are 17 slides of all levels, colours, and types, and plenty for the younger ones. There are several pools, with fountains, and a wave machine. There are lockers for your clothes, and several fast food cafes, and shaded picnic areas.
5. Donana National Park is a fantastic place to go for a picnic and walk on your holiday in the Cost de la Luz. It is Europe’s largest national park, which is protected by the UNESCO agreement. You may see deer, many species of birds including vultures and eagles, wild boar, badgers, otters, and rabbits. If you are lucky you will spot the endangered Lynx cat which looks a bit like a domestic cat with a short tail and characteristics of a leopard. They feed off the deer, but do not worry they are not dangerous to humans.
