We're All Going to Die! So says the great sage Homer Simpson every few episodes. Well, the regular media matches him threat for threat with doomsday scenarios. Alas, MSRA is a bacteria you really need to take note of.
What is MSRA? Pronounced "mursa," it stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which explains why everyone uses an abbreviation. In more practical terms, it is a bacteria that is very scary because it is resistant to traditional antibiotic treatments.
Warnings have been issued for years that the medical profession was over prescribing antibiotics. So what? Well, the concern was the fact that bacteria mutate repeatedly, which led to the concern that one would evolve a resistant to the usual treatments.
Once this came to be, the concern came down to how we would then stop the devastating consequences of untreatable staph infection which can result in death. Such a superbug could end the concerns of overpopulation on the planet.
The scary news is MSRA appears to potentially be such a bacteria or at least the precursor to one. The bug has proven to be very resistant to our most useful antibiotics including penicillin, methicillin, and cephalosporins.
It is unclear if MSRA is the superbug that has long been feared because mortality rates are difficult to establish. Many parts of the world are unfamiliar with the bug and thus fail to diagnose it as such, often attributing deaths to incorrect causes.
How big an impact is MSRA making in the USA now? A 2005 study found that it was responsible for more deaths than were caused for the same year by AIDS. Think about that for a minute. Pretty scary, eh?
MSRA has presented in very specific locations. As reported in the media, it tends to breakout in hospitals, nursing homes and gyms. There have been isolated cases in schools as well. There has been no reported general breakout in workplaces or the general public.
Staph infection is, in fact, a very common bug in the world. Billions of us carry it on our skin. MSRA is a vicious version of it, but only a few of us carry it. If it becomes more common, however, watch out.
