The Importance Of Web Traffic Statistics

This Marketing Article is Brought To You By - Jeff Alderson

Understanding how to analyze web traffic stats can be important for a variety of reasons. There are a few tricks involved in interpreting the data, however.

The most accurate data on traffic tends to come from the web hosting companies themselves. They, unfortunately, can provide so much information that it might overwhelm at first. Look for the data that applies to the business or website at hand. One of the first things to consider is the typical amount of visitors that stop at a site on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

The numbers that come from a web hosting company are generally the most accurate in regard to a site's activity levels. Take care not to read too much into these numbers, however. It is important to dig a little deeper. Although it might seem like the more visitors on a site, the better, this isn't always the case. It's important to peel back a layer or two to find out what visitors do once they get on a site. This is the true measure of a site's effectiveness.

A lot of people confuse hits with quality traffic. Hits are nothing more than the number of information requests the server receives. Hits can actually equate to nothing more than the number of graphics on a page. Should, for example, your homepage have 20 pictures on it, the server will record 20 hits for a single visitor looking at that page. This means that hits are not that important when analyzing traffic.

The more traffic a site gets, the easier it becomes to get an accurate interpretation of statistics. The lower the number, the more likely it is that the analysis will be distorted somewhat.

The trick is to use traffic stats to determine how effective or ineffective your site is for visitors. One number that can help to this end is the length of time visitors spend on the site. If visits are short, there could be a problem, which should be solved quickly.

In some cases, the problem turns out to be nothing more earth shattering than bad keywords drawing in the wrong traffic. In other cases, it could be the visual design of the site turning off visitors. Should your site be difficult to navigate or hard on the eyes, people might turn away fast. If you make the decision to tweak things to fix these issues, study the numbers again to see if the tweaks worked.

It is also possible to use stats to determine how specific pages on a site are performing. If visitors move too quickly away from important pages, they definitely need improvements. If, on the converse, a page that isn't important gets too much attention, it might be wise to put better content on it since visitors seem to go there on their own.

Learning to read stats and decipher them can be important for all sites. The practice is especially important for those who want to make money from their efforts. Using these numbers can really pay off in regard to tweaking a site to its optimum potential.

Another place these stats can be important is in regard to exit pages. While you might have designated exit pages, such as order forms, other pages might show up on stats as exit points. These are normal to an extent. If a page that isn't meant to be an exit point shows up too much as one, it might be time to tweak it. Look for weaknesses and try to improve them.

After you've looked at visitor stats, then consider the keywords. Look at the reports to see which keywords work and actually bring in traffic. If visitors are coming in on keywords important to your site, you're on the right track. If a particular keyword brings in those visitors who actually do what you want them to, that keyword is very important.

Should a lot of visitors arrive by way of weak keywords that are not part of the theme, it is time to get rid of these keywords on your site. Since these visitors are not likely to buy or act because the theme doesn't fit your need, focusing efforts on these keywords can be a waste of time.

Traffic statistics are ideal for helping webmasters see if they are doing their job well. These can even be used to extrapolate areas where room for improvement exists. Monitor stats closely to make the most of your site and your traffic.
