The Eye of Horus and its components

This Jewelry Article is Brought To You By - Ken Wilson

Almost everybody tends to look in the past for some answers to their problems. When we look into the past, we turn our eyes and ears to those cultures that have known great success and development especially for the period of time within which they flourished.

Egyptian culture is one of them, a culture filled with symbols that bear great significance and have a lot of beneficial effects for people all over the world today. When you are a strong believer, all of your beliefs have a way of helping you in one way or another.

A very powerful symbol from the Egyptian culture is the Eye of Horus. This shape consists of a triangle that comprises the symbolic shape of an eye. Strong believers around the world have started to wear pendants shaped as this symbol for protection and health.

There are some amazing traits of the Eye of Horus symbol which determine us to wonder about the way of thinking from those days. Apart from mathematical formulas, which have some significance underneath, there are also a lot of similarities between this symbol and some symbols from other cultures, which are different from both a temporal as well as a geographical setting.

The Eye of Horus includes a number of mathematical fractions, each with its own significance, as it was pointed out afore. The fractions that are included in this symbol represented a way in which people perceive the surrounding reality.

The fractions started at ½ and went all the way down to 1/64. If you would add all of them, we will obtain the rounded off number one which represented the basis of the measurement system in the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt.

The first fraction is ½, represented by the right side of the Eye of Horus. Shaped like a nose, this was an obvious symbol of our sense of smell. The ¼ fraction was represented in the middle of the eye by the pupil, a clear symbol for sight. Going towards the left side, where the ear can be found, we will come across the fraction 1/16, which also bears the significance of our hearing senses.

Another component of our face is the mouth, and the main sense we attribute to this part is taste. The part of the Eye of Horus that was used to symbolize this trait is a curved tail that goes under the basic components of the eye, starting at the nose and finishing at the outer part of the ear. The mathematical fraction that represented this sense was 1/32.

At one end of this curved tail, the one under the nose, there was another symbol which was a representation of another one of our senses: touch. This significance was introduced in the symbol as a leg that touched the ground and the fraction that was used was 1/64.

On top of all our physical senses, smell, sight, hearing, taste and touch, there is one greater than them all, the one that makes us worthy of the name humans. This sense is thought, the power of thinking, and in the Eye of Horus this was symbolized by the eyebrow and by the only fraction left: 1/8.
