The Different Types of Massages

This Stress Management Article is Brought To You By - Rico Respad

In our modern way of life, rushing is pretty much a standard. This, of course, leads to stress and body abuse. One way to combat this course of events is to schedule a massage to give both your mind and body a break.

Picture a massage and you, me and everyone else thinks of the version with a faintly Eastern feel to it. While such images are certainly correct, there are actually many styles of massages out there. In fact, the most popular is not Eastern at all.

The number on massage in America is the Swedish. Ask for a general massage, and this is what you get. It is a relaxing massage made up of smooth strokes and circular motions. Soft music is often played. Good for temporary relief for a day or two.

Not all massages are meant to be relaxing. Sometimes, the focus is not on how you feel during the massage, so much as it is on how you feel afterwards. In this case, we are talking about the famous deep tissue massage. Perhaps I should say infamous.

If you don't know what you are getting into, you might not like the deep tissue massage at first. It can be painful, but not excessively so. Once it is completed, however, you will feel like a piece of cooked pasta and much better.

Moving beyond the traditional massage on the flat of your stomach pose, we come to the Thai massage. The goal is to align your energy points. This is accomplished by force yoga, to wit, the therapist will bend and twist you this way and that.

In my humble opinion, a quality Thai massage is the best in the world. Unfortunately, finding a quality practitioner is difficult. Outside of Thailand, I have yet to find one that really does the job. Mediocre Thai massages are worthless, so make sure to be wary.

Our next massage comes out of Japan and is also very popular. The Shiatsu massage is also designed to treat the energy points in your body. Instead of twisting and bending you, however, it accomplishes this through finger manipulation of your meridians.

The hot stone massage is becoming more popular by the day it seems. This is a light massage that uses heat to unlock muscle intersections. Stones are heated and then placed on points of muscle tension. The tension then melts away. A very superficial massage.

Having a child is a wonderful thing, but it can work over your body. The pregnancy massage is designed to help eliminate aches, pains and swelling for expectant mothers. This should only be undertaken using a therapist trained in the concept.

At the end of the day, it is pretty hard to go wrong with any particular massage. In one form or another, all massages are designed to give your body a much needed tune up. They certainly achieve such results.
