Those of us who are dog owners were quite alarmed recently by the need for a mass recall of pet food. When something like this occurs, the best advice is probably to contact your vet. Another good idea is to begin a search on the Internet to see what the contents of various products are, to what extent these products are tested, and any other information that helps you choose a brand that is best for your pet.
There is a limit as to what information a pet food manufacturer must put on the label as the industry is basically self-regulating. Some manufacturers will offer more information than others. A online review of the ingredients of several brands can be a good first step in finding the best possible product for your pet.
Inferior pet foods often contain ingredients that are difficult for your dog to digest. These ingredients include certain chicken by-products, gluten, sugar, wheat and corn. Just because your pet seems to be going after its meals with enthusiasm doesn't mean that the meal is necessarily healthy. In your search for a quality product you can immediately eliminate those products containing a significant amount of the aforementioned ingredients.
Look for a product that is field tested by the company which produces it. This is likely to be a superior product in terms of being beneficial to you pet's health. Bear in mind that the tests may be limited to the company's premier product so if you are considering a lesser grade product compare labels.
We've mentioned some ingredients to avoid. What about those ingredients that are desirable? A list of these would include rice or potatoes, turkey or chicken meal, fish or lamb meal, vegetables and vitamins (especially vitamin E) and the Omega fatty acids. A combination of these ingredients should ensure a healthy skin and coat for you pet, a sign of good health.
While searching the Internet may assist in determining the ingredients of certain products, the Internet is also a good source for product reviews, both from independent testing organizations and consumers themselves. This knowledge can be valuable in assisting you in making a good choice of food for your dog.
What about organic pet food? Organic food has been popular with humans for years and it's popularity is steadily increasing. Now organic dog food is making an appearance and worth looking into. When next in your pet store or supermarket look for the word \"Natural\" on the box or bag of dog food and then of course read the label.
While it can be a little more expensive and somewhat time consuming, you can always make your own pet food. In doing so you have complete control over what goes into your pet's meal. Of course we're not talking about table scraps here but a combination of ingredients such as beef or beef broth, dairy products, vegetable oil, cornmeal or flour, or the ingredients mentioned previously. Your best friend will probably agree that it is worth the effort!
