I started thinking about how you really do know what you are getting with a chain restaurant location the other day. I was out of town to relax and shop for the afternoon when I had a different experience. I was just walking around when hunger struck so I stopped in at a small restaurant that was located in the shopping district. I ordered one of my usuals from a chain restaurant back home.
The chili burger I got was not what I am familiar with. I had been waiting anxiously for it but wasn't impressed by what was delivered to me. The portions at this restaurant were much more than at the one I often frequent. I was expecting the burger to be smothered in delicious homemade green chili that was spicy but not beyond the ability to eat it. I ended up with red chili though that I am sure wasn't homemade.
This is the type of scenario that makes a chain restaurant so appealing. You know exactly what you are going to get when you walk in the door. The menu, the portions, and the ingredients are all going to be the same. There is no guessing as to what you will end up with or surprises along the way.
There are many different reasons why people travel in our world. They may have family they haven't seen in a while, have a job that requires it, or they want to check out new places so they take a vacation. People have to eat and when they are away from home they commonly do so at a restaurant. Most feel they can't go wrong if they stick with a type of restaurant that they already know about.
As consumers, most of us like to stick to what is familiar. We want to be able to order and feel confident that we will be happy with our meal. You will notice even children can easily identify trademarks of chain restaurants. They know exactly what can be found when they see those golden arches for McDonalds.
This is why so many people interested in starting a restaurant take the chain route. They know the key to success is getting people to walk in the door. If they are part of a restaurant chain that has already established itself as offering quality foods, excellent service, and a terrific overall dining experience they don't have to start from scratch to establish these elements.
Yet being part of a chain restaurant can be detrimental at times too. If another business with the same name is struggling due to poor food, sanitation issues, or even the finding of a foreign object in the food it can adversely affect your particular location as well.
People love to get their money's worth though, and they often feel confident they will get it when they visit a chain restaurant. They may be afraid to take a risk on a new place as it may not be up to their standards. Still, you are encouraged to try a new place from time to time. This way you can expand your experiences and you may find a place you are very impressed with.
