What is an Oscar?
The Academy Awards of scars are the most famous of all film awards. They have been presented since 1929. The awards are voted for by the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science, which has more than 5,500 members, including previous nominees and winners. They make a shortlist of five nominees in each of 24 categories (apart from special, honorary and technical awards) then select the winners.
The award is a gold-plated statuette, which stands 34.3cm high and weighs 3.8kg. According to legend, academy librarian Margaret Herrick named the statuette Oscar because she thought it looked like her Uncle Oscar! Main categories include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, as well as awards for screenplay, cinematography, soundtrack, documentary, foreign film and son on.
Most wins
These three films have each won 11 Oscars, including best picture: Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997) and The Lord of the rings: The Return of the King (2003).
A no-win situation
The Turning Point (1977) and the Color Purple (1985) had 11 nominations each but didn’t win a single Oscar. Gangs of New York (2002) received 10 nominations without a win. Cabaret (1972) is the only film to win eight Oscars without winning best Picture.
Long and short
Gone with the Wind (1939) was the longest film (238 minutes) and the first colour film to win Best Picture. Marty (1955 was the shortest Best Picture winner at 91 minutes.
Black and white
Marty was also one of the last black and white films to win Best Picture. The Apartment (1960) and Schindler’s List (1993) are the only black and white films to have won since then.
ONE AND ONLY
Keisha Castle-Hughes is the only actress to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category before her 14th birthday. Keisha was 13 when she was nominated for her role in whale Rider, in 2004. She was when younger, 11, when she acted in the film, despite having no previous experience. She then took the role of Queen Apailana of Naboo in Star Wars: Episode 111- Revenge of the Sith (2005)
