One of the procedures for reducing the size of the breast is breast reduction surgery, which is performed by cosmetic or plastic surgeons. It usually involves liposuction of the fats in the breast, after which they are the reshaped. This procedure can be done for both women and men. When done with men, the procedure is called gynecomastia surgery.
Gynecomastia, a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men, is common in men of any age; around 50% of men worldwide has this condition. It can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
The decision to have breast reduction surgery is extremely personal and you'll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. The risks include unfavorable scarring, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent, anesthesia risks, bleeding, blood clots, poor wound healing and breast contour and shape irregularities.
There are a lot of instances where lifestyle changes or diet can reverse gynecomastia; in particular, cardio-aerobic exercises and weightlifting can do wonders to gynecomastia. For others, the only choice is surgery. Since it's an outpatient surgery, the patient doesn't need to stay in the hospital for a long period of time after surgery save for a few days for recovery.
Gynecomastia is done by subjecting the patient under general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, a small incision just below the areola is done by the surgeon. The excess breast tissue is removed from the area, while the fat is removed through liposuction. The procedure usually costs from around $2000 to as high as $6000. Before undergoing the procedure, it is advised that the patient be informed thoroughly first.
