Everybody loves the sweet little dog from those Taco Bell commercials, and it is true that Chihuahuas make lovely little pets, but did you know that the lives of these small dogs, when purchased from a pet store, can be a long and difficult trial to be sure? It is a sad fact in our country today that many of the desirable small breed dogs are being churned out by the hundreds each year by unscrupulous breeders who run puppy mills. A Chihuahua breeder supplying pet stores with these little dogs is usually a part of one of these terrible and inhumane centers.

The sad thing is, most people do not realize that when they purchase a Chihuahua puppy from a pet store, they are contributing to the inhumane conditions in which these puppy mills keep their dogs. Because, unbeknownst to buyers who only see the sweet little faces in the window, the majority of pet stores are being supplied directly by many a dishonest Chihuahua breeder. These pups are then shipped as quickly as possible, often before they are completely weaned, without receiving the medical treatment that is necessary to ensure their health. This has led many a new dog owner to take home a pup that will eventually cost them thousands of dollars in vet bills.

When you make the decision to only purchase Chihuahua puppies from a respected Chihuahua breeder you can rest assured that you are doing your part to help put these puppy mills out of business. With every puppy that is purchased from a pet store, another puppy mill makes a profit and continues their cycle of cruelty to animals.

This has led to many new dog owners discovering that their new puppy needs extensive medical attention, or worse needs to be put down immediately. All too often, the pups bought in pet stores die within just a few months of going home with their new owners.

Join the battle against puppy mills by only getting your dog from a respected Chihuahua breeder. You can easily get a recommendation from any vet on his or her opinion as to breeders who treat their animals well and get them the medical attention they deserve.

If you aren't sure how to find an honest Chihuahua breeder, talk to your vet about some of the Chihuahua breeders that he or she respects and knows. But above all - never buy a pup from a pet store.
