I'm not Martha Stewart. In fact I have no aspirations to ever become a Martha close. But I do love a good family gathering. I also love to spend time with my friends. When we are together, we all have fun and I'm always glad we hosted the party afterwards. But it's that pre-party time before where there seems to be so much to do that has me doubting the effort. It's a lot of work!
I love watching the Food Channel. And the cooking celebs make throwing a party look oh so easy. They have these fabulous looking meals that sit on designer like tables that could easily impress royalty. It's the ease of effort that tends to fool me. I start to think that it could be simple to take on a themed party. I mean if they can do it in 30 minutes, can't I do it in an hour or two? Whenever I decide to fall for the hype, it doesn't take long for reality to set in. I mean I live in a great home. But it's not a palace and with 4 of us actually living in it (with both my husband and I working full time jobs outside the home) it is rarely entertaining ready. I mean you can almost always find a cup or two that wasn't put in the dishwasher. Then there is the years of wear or tear that shows on some of our stonewear. Not the perfect conditions you'd expect for a razzle dazzle event. Sometimes I feel as though I just don't measure up to the high standards that I see on these shows. I'm certain Martha would refuse to come to my house. And she'd think me lazy for preferring to play with my kids while there are a handful of dirty dishes sitting on my kitchen counter. I consider whether I even have any time for entertaining. Of course I eventually snap out of it. I mean when I go to my friends houses for parties its no formal affair and I like that. No one's home is spotless and they, like we, have what could be embarrassing stains on their carpet. There place settings may not all match and, funny, that has no impact on the fun we have. And when I remember that these imperfect people are just like me, I start to relax. I mean my friends and family are just like me. Trying to juggle jobs and families and they don't expect perfection. In fact, perfection would likely make them feel a little uncomfortable. And I realize I'm happy to have them in my life. And that any gathering is celebration enough.
