In 1996 Time Inc. decided to capitalize on the American Spanish-speaking market and launched People en Espanol. Though the magazine started out as an edition of People Magazine, it has evolved, distinguishing itself from the English-language People. In 1996 The New York Times reported the publishers at Time Inc. decided to start a Spanish-language magazine after an issue featuring the late singer Selena sold out. At first People en Espanol was just People Magazine articles translated into Spanish; now it produces original content on celebrity gossip, fashion, beauty, pop culture and trends.
In 2007 Adweek named People en Espanol in their “Hot List 10 Under 50” for the fourth year in a row. Media Industry named the magazine “Most Notable Magazine Launches in the Last 20 Years” in 2006 and “Hottest Consumer Magazine Launches of the Past 20 Years” in 2005.
Recognizing that readers are from a diverse background and speak different variations of the Spanish language People en Espanol editors aim to use a neutral variety of the Spanish language.
People en Espanol publishes 11 issues each year. Like People Magazine, People en Espanol features special issues like “Los 50 Mas Bellos” (“50 Most Beautiful People”), which celebrates the most beautiful Latino stars from the entertainment world, sports and politics. There’s also “Estrella del Ano” (“Star of the Year”) and “Los 100 Hispanos Mas Influyentes” (“100 Most Influential Hispanics.”
Stars that have graced People en Espanol’s “Mas Bellos” covers include Christina Aguilera, Mario Lopez, Jennifer Lopez, Paulina Rubio, Juan Soler, Thalia, Shakira and Ricky Martin among many others.
The “Estrella del Ano” issue began in 2004 and features the most exuberant Hispanic personality of the year. Some covers stars for “Estrella del Ano” have been Edith Gonzalez, Gabriela Spanic, Barbara Mori and Myrka Dellanos.
People en Espanol has gained a reputation of breaking Hispanic-related international news. In recent years several entertainers have granted People en Espanol exclusive interviews.
The People en Espanol website companion is available in Spanish and English and covers both Hispanic and non-Hispanic celebrities but predominately covers Hispanic celebrities. Some recent stories include the birth of Ricky Martin’s twins, Gloria Estefan’s daughter Emily performing in concert with her mother and a profile on Selena Gomez.
Other magazines in Spanish include Maxim and National Geographic magazines.
