If you do it properly, you really can make a lot of money as an affiliate. Of course, you have to have a website, or several websites, which generate traffic. And, you have to select the right affiliate programs.
To choose your affiliate program or programs well, you need to consider everything you know about your website visitors. Where do they live? Are they men or women? How old are most of them? What do they need? What do they like?
Do a lot of thinking about who your visitors are, what their interests are, and what they might want to buy. The products or services you choose must be a good match for your audience or it doesn't matter how many folks visit your website. And, don't marry your first conclusions...if the product you choose doesn't sell well, consider trying others.
When considering affiliate programs, you might also want to consider some that pay you for sales leads rather than actual sales. In some instances, programs will pay you up to $50 or more when a visitor to your site requests information about a product or service.
Because all sorts of companies want to build their mailing lists, you can even earn a commission when someone signs up for a coupon, a free restaurant meal , or other freebies.
Obviously, you want to select programs which pay high commissions, but commissions alone won't determine your earnings. Try to find programs which will pay you for attracting other affiliates, particularly two and three tier programs. One program I belong to pays me 10% of all the earnings of folks I bring in.
And, you should look for programs which:
1. offer you good online tracking so you can see how you're doing.
2. attractive banners or well written text ads which will produce results for you.
3. respond to your concerns, answer your questions, and pay you on time.
4. meets your visitors needs at a fair price.
Finally, and here's one of the best bits of advice I ever got, track everything that moves to look for trends and areas in which you can improve performance.
