MySpace - What is the Buzz all About?

This Internet Article is Brought To You By - Robert Thomson

MySpace is the most popular social networking website which offers an interactive, user submitted network of friends, personal profiles, groups, photos, blogs, music and videos for teens and adults internationally. It has its headquarters in Beverly Hills, California, USA, where it shares an office building with its parent company, Fox Interactive Media; which is owned by News Corporation, which has its headquarters in New York City.

The 100 millionth account was created on August 6, 2006 by a teenager in the Netherlands and a news story claimed that Myspace had 106 million user accounts on September 8, 2006, and the site supposedly attracts 230,000 new user registrations per day.

A typical MySpace profile includes a digital photo and information about personal interests. The amount of detail included in the profile is up to the user and submitted voluntarily. MySpace policy requires users be at least 14 years of age to join. Members routinely send each other messages and "network" or socialize within the MySpace community.

The format of MySpace makes it easy for anyone to submit profile information, even if they have little computer experience. Though Myspace has proved to be incredibly popular, reportedly hosting over 60 million profiles, it has also come under criticism. The major concern is that the vast number of MySpace users may be too inexperienced to understand the potential danger of posting too much personal information online. Some profiles contain not only the user’s picture, but also the user's first and last name, address, and details like favorite music and foods. This information allows a predator or an anti-social person to easily target and make friends with a victim.

MySpace users might also prefer to fill out "the survey." The survey asks private questions such as whether the user has ever smoked, drunken alcohol, or taken drugs. Users that post on MySpace expect their profiles to be read only by kids of their own age. MySpace user profiles provide a perfect hunting ground where potential predators can choose, track and befriend victims. Armed with lots of personal information, the would-be predator can easily manipulate the potential victim into a fake sense of security and acquaintance. Though false profiles are forbidden by MySpace, they are absolutely impossible to prevent them.

You can create a community on MySpace and you can share photos, blogs and interests with your increasing network of mutual friends!
