Creating an Integral Culture Observers have noted that contemporary society is characterized by three sets of opposing forces:
1. BUSINESS-AS-USUAL forces that want to maintain the existing institutions and ways of doing things. They want to keep the mechanisms of institutional and governmental control pretty much as they are, keep the economy global and growing, and... Read more

One of the things that fascinates me about doll collecting is the interplay between doll-loving and doll-collecting. What I mean is that most people who collect dolls today first started out as doll lovers. On the other hand, we could say that those who are doll lovers today will probably be the doll collectors of tomorrow. A love of dolls will naturally encourage a love of collecting them, and those who collect dolls will deepen in their appreciation and love for them.
When it comes to doll collecting many people think of porcelain collectible dolls. These dolls are usually quite delicate (not the thing for children) and very beautiful. And they hearken back to a bygone era, a time when sophistication and refinement were highly valued. As well, miniature porcelain doll kits are valued -- not only by collectors, but also those who make clothing and accessories for their dolls.
You can see this also at work among those who collect doll houses. What are the doll houses that are most highly valued -- the most collectible? They are the doll houses that are in an older style -- perhaps a Victorian house with a big wrap around porch. Again there is that nostalgia thing going on. It's interesting that even folks designing a dollhouse on their computer at home will choose a dollhouse design that represents a building from the past. After all, how many doll houses have you seen that resemble a modern skyscraper, or split-level ranch house in the suburbs?
Another interesting area of doll collecting is the collecting of Amish doll furniture. Amish doll furniture is highly collectible due to its high quality -- being manufactured by authentic Amish craftsmen. Amish doll furniture is renowned for its high quality and attention to detail. There is nothing about Amish doll furniture that looks mass-produced, that's for sure.
And if you're looking to find dolls that are really collectible, you simply can't go wrong if you collect Franklin mint dolls. I'm sure you've seen these advertised -- we all have. They feature the faces of many famous people: movie stars, royalty, TV personalities. Franklin mint dolls are of course highly collectible and many of them have appreciated greatly in price since their initial introduction.
Another area of popular doll collecting is that of Betsy McCall dolls. These dolls and also doll accessories have been around for some time -- Betsy McCall was first featured on the cover of McCall's Magazine during the 1950s -- and today Betsy McCall dolls and accessories are becoming popular again.
The American Girl Company is making it easy for little girls to relate to their dolls. This innovative company manufactures a line of doll clothing and accessories that match an identical set of clothing for girls. This means that your granddaughter or niece could pretend they have a "little sister" -- or better yet, a twin sister -- which they can carry with them at all times.
Of final area where you might want to begin collecting is that of primitive dolls. These resemble the kinds of dolls carried by children during the pioneer days. They are not sophisticated dolls at all, being made with the simplest of fabrics -- they really communicate a sense of history, history that you can hold in your hands.
The nice thing about doll collecting is that it is such a vast field of collecting that no matter what your interests, you will find a doll type or style that you will enjoy collecting. In addition to the pleasure that you will receive from collecting them, if you become a savvy collector you can put together a collection which will increase in value greatly over time. Imagine being able to give your doll collection to your own favorite little girl; then they can continue your collection where you left off.
