Moraira Tourist Information

This Destinations Article is Brought To You By - Gary Marshall

Moraira is a pretty little town on the Costa Blanca, a few miles south of Javea. Just a few decades ago Moraira was little more than a cluster of whitewashed fishermen's cottages along the waterfront. Although a smart new marina and several urbanisations have since been built, the resort has not lost its considerable charm.

Artifacts discovered in a cave on nearby Cap d'Or suggest that the area was inhabited during the Paleolithic era (around 15,000 years ago). During the 16th century, Barbary pirates regularly attacked the Spanish coastline. As a result, both the Torre del Cap d'Or watchtower and Moraira Castle were constructed around this time as part of the town's coastal defenses.

Most of Moraira's beaches have fine sand and clear seawater. Several of them have also been awarded a European Blue Flag. The resort's main beach, Platja de L'Ampolla, is within walking distance of the town centre although it can get quite busy during the summer. Several bars and cafes are situated nearby. A little further south is the beach of Platgetes which is bordered by a seafront promenade. The Platja del Portet, situated north of the marina, boasts beautiful golden sand. Alongside it are a number of bars and restaurants.

There are several picturesque coves along Moraira's coastline. Some of them are quite rocky, although that does make them ideal for snorkeling. One of the best-known coves is Cala Punta Estrella, which is accessed via a stairway cut into the rocks. There are more hidden beaches and coves along the coast road towards Calpe, including the pretty Cala Advocat and Cala Andrago. The latter has a restaurant right next to the sea. Moraira's marina is situated next to the town centre. It has more than 600 berths and is also home to a sailing school, yacht club and restaurant. The fish auction, which is held in the marina at 10am every morning, is well worth seeing.

Moraira has a variety of restaurants offering a range of cuisine, including Italian, Chinese and Indian. There's also a good choice of places, especially in the main square, where you can enjoy traditional Spanish fare such as paella and tapas. Live entertainment is laid on at many, hotels and bars, especially during the summer months. There is one nightclub in town, Costa Sur, which occasionally hosts foam parties.

Every Friday morning there is a weekly market in the main car park. If you enjoy a bit of bargain hunting there is another market every Wednesday in the nearby town of Teulada. Between Moraira and Teulada is the La Fonta go-karting circuit.

Moraira's main fiesta takes place in mid-July. Held in honour of the Virgen del Carmen and Virgen de los Desamparados, this celebration is marked by a series of colourful processions, games and competitions. Another popular event is the Moors and Christians festival in June, which celebrates the Christians victory over the Moors in the 14th century. Many of the townsfolk dress up in traditional costumes and noisily recreate the fierce battles on L'Ampolla beach.
