Mazarron Tourist Information

This Destinations Article is Brought To You By - Gary Marshall

Mazarron is located on the Costa Calida in south-east Spain. The town's biggest draw is its long stretch of coastline which boasts some of the best beaches in the country. Mazarron has a long history with the Phoenician, Roman and Moorish civilisations all passing through. Most were attracted here because of the abundance of natural minerals, including lead and iron ore, which can be found in the area.

Mazarron is situated within a large bay surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Sierra de Almenara and Sierra de Algarrobo. Like many Spanish resorts, Mazarron actually consists of two main parts. Puerta del Mazarron lies on the coast, while the original old town of Mazarron, which grew as a result of the mining industry, is located a few miles inland. The latter has several historic monuments, such as Veles Castle, La Purisma convent, and the San Andres Church, notable for its fine Mudejar ceiling.

Puerta de Mazarron has a small marina with 200 berths, and an attractive seafront promenade lined with shops, bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours. Although the resort is fairly quiet most of the year, it's very popular during July and August, especially with Spanish families. The town's economy still relies very much on the fishing industry, with tuna being of particular importance.

Mazarron has around 20 miles (35km) of coastline consisting of long sandy beaches and small coves. Many of the beaches, including Playa del Casteller, Playa de Bahia and Playa de Nares, have been awarded a European Blue Flag. With their shallow water and gently sloping sands, they are also suitable for young children. Naturism is fairly common on several of the remote beaches such as Percheles and Los Lobos. To the west of Puerta de Mazarron is the small fishing village of Bolnuevo, famous for its spectacular rock formations next to the beach. Over a period of thousands of years the wind has eroded the soft sandstone rocks to create some weird and wonderful shapes.

Mazarron has a great deal of natural beauty, especially in the protected areas of the Sierra de las Moreras and Cabo Tinoso. The Sierra Espuna natural park, situated further to the north, is especially popular with hikers. There are a couple of interesting towns within easy reach of Mazarron. To the east is Cartagena, notable for its numerous museums and historic monuments, while the town of Lorca is famous for its textiles and ceramics.

Puerta del Mazarron celebrates its patron saint, San Jose, in mid-March. During the fiesta a giant statue (falla), which usually has a satirical theme, is constructed on the beach. The statue is then set alight accompanied by a large fireworks display. There are a series of concerts, sporting events and open-air celebrations during the town's Summer Festival throughout July and August. Each district of Mazarron usually has its own feast day, including Canada de Gallego (13th June), Pastrana (25th July), and the La Majada district (8th September). These feast days are usually marked by colourful processions, musical performances and other cultural activities.
