Mastering the Job Market Through Postgraduate Studies

This Education Article is Brought To You By - Kingston J. Amadan

Graduating with a bachelor degree is no simple feat, and many who do so feel they are ready for the job market. Mounting student loan debt and the desire to earn money often push graduates to find work immediately, with little consideration for their long term future.

Depending on the course of study taken by a student, postgraduate programs can be imperative to higher earnings and upper tier positions within the specific field or simply optional. Most psychology majors won’t earn substantially more than high school graduates with a bachelor of psychology degree and must have a master of social work or master of psychology degree to get into the realm of respectable earnings. A doctorate in this field is what most aspire to obtain. Likewise, an IT professional with a bachelor degree in computer science might not experience any major earnings differences with a master’s degree in computer science. Postgraduate study in the IT field with a side concentration or specialization will most certainly open doors to other opportunities, but the immediate earnings changes may not offer the noticeable jump that say, going from a bachelor of business degree to an MBA will.

Regardless of whether a postgraduate degree will open the proverbial gates of the promised land or simply add ten percent to an already respectable salary, going into the workforce is never a bad option. Experience speaks volumes on any resume and let’s face it, after four or more years of working part time, not at all or full time in a less than lucrative situation, a good paycheck can solve a lot of issues. The problem is when graduates who would do well to complete a postgraduate degree program join the workforce with no plan to eventually further their studies or at least periodically examine their educational options.

Going into a master’s program takes determination and isn’t something that should be entered into lightly. For many students, a break in between a bachelor and postgraduate degree is necessary. For others, entering the workforce signifies the end of their academic involvement. Students need to examine their situation once they find employment to see if the expense and time related commitments of postgraduate studies are possible and plausible. For most, a master’s degree or beyond will pay for itself in better earnings and upward mobility over time.
