Main Reasons for Divorce

This Divorce Article is Brought To You By - James Walsh

The adults suffer as well. There is a division of assets and they have to start their life all over again. There are financial implications too as the solicitors have to be paid and the purchasing power of the partners reduces.

If divorce has such terrible consequences, why do people opt for it? There are many reasons why a marriage can disintegrate as the partners decide to call it quits and go their own separate ways. Some of the common ones are given below.

Infidelity

Extra-marital affairs are becoming quite common in today’s world due to the unique lifestyle of modern age. There are many opportunities for men and women to mix away from homes. Most affairs blossom in an office atmosphere between colleagues. They can also take place with the best friend of one’s partner. Spousal infidelity is quite a serious situation. It destroys the relationship because it strikes at the foundation of trust over which the entire edifice of marriage is built. There is hardly any marriage that is able to survive an extra-marital affair a partner. Children whose parents divorce due to infidelity learn to distrust human relationships and themselves have problems in establishing stable relationships later in life.

Emotional Abuse

There are many married people who derive pleasure out of abusing their partner or children emotionally. This is caustic behaviour that leaves the victim a nervous wreck full of stress and anxiety and devoid of any self-esteem. Emotional abuse is subtle and cannot be observed by naked eyes. It can only be felt but its effects are devastating nevertheless. Children who suffered emotional abuse in early childhood find it impossible to recover from its consequences. They carry its scars for the rest of their lives and develop many flaws in their personality. Adults develop psychosomatic disorders and live amidst tremendous stress and depression.

Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is cruder than emotional abuse. It involves behaviour such as beatings, slaps, pushing around and verbal castigation including abuses and threats. The effect of physical abuse is not restricted to the body alone. Whenever an adult or child gets beaten, he or she suffers emotional damage. Sometimes physical abuse is severe enough to require hospitalisation of the victim. Divorce is a good solution to get rid of an abusive relationship where the partner is a chronic beater of adults or children.

Financial Problems

Money is the engine which greases the wheels of marriage. When the partners get married, they have many aspirations and expectations from the relationship. They want to live a certain kind of lifestyle and buy some assets to make life comfortable. The problem arises when the family income is not sufficient to meet the aspirations of a partner or even essential expenses such as education of children. Lack of resources causes friction in marriage. There are frequent quarrels in the family as the partners feel they have been short-changed and the relationship did not turn out to be what they had expected.

Incompatible Personalities

It is essential to know the partner closely before marriage if the relationship is to have any chance of success. One should actually question the would-be spouse for his or her aspirations, goals and tastes in life and go ahead only if they match with one’s own. Incompatible personalities of partners creates a large chance that the relationship may get rocky once the hormones begin to subside.

General Boredom

Partners have a great time four or five years into the marriage. There is still a lot of chemistry between the two and mutual attraction is still quite strong. After this period, though, the charm begins to wear off. Familiarity breeds contempt and a general boredom enters the relationship. This happens typically after seven years of marriage (hence the name “seven-year itch). This is the time when there is a huge chance of a partner stumbling into extra-marital affair. The partners may opt for divorce as they decide to broaden their horizons and enter into fresh new relationships.

Physical Problems and Health Condition

Regular physical intimacy is something that is absolutely essential to make the marriage successful. It promotes a feeling of warmth and proximity between the partners. Since intimacy is a natural human urge, its non-fulfilment would either destroy the relationship or force a partner to look outside marriage for a good physical life. Either way, divorce will be the result sooner or later.
