I just recently purchased a new phone, the HTC Tilt. It's a great little device, even though Windows Mobile is a little slow. But after using it for a while, I realized that I didn't have a very good ringtone. And looking through the list of the ones the phone came with, there wasn't anything very exciting there either.
So what to do? How do you get new ringtones? And what do I do to get them on my phone? What should you even choose as a ringtone? Well, there are many different types. You should start off by determining what you like and what you don't like. Are there ringtones that annoy you? When you're out shopping or with friends, are you annoyed to hear someone's mp3 ringtone blasting? Mp3's as ringtones seem to be something that annoys a lot of people.
So, now that you know what annoys you, what are things that don't bother you? How about the sound of a real phone ringing? That's something that's always annoyed me. Cell phones have the ability to play whatever you want and you choose a standard ring? Annoying. Or even worse is when someone leaves their phone on the default ring. I'm sick of those.
If you're into video games, think about which games had the best music or memorable sound effects and then try searching for a copy of them on Google. One of the most interesting ringtones I've heard is the Pokemon battle song. It's almost like you're in the world of Pokemon and whenever someone calls you, it's like you're going into battle. Neat! Another good one is the Mario theme song. That's always classic. If you're not into games, what else do you like? Maybe science fiction films? Maybe look for something creepy sounding.
After you figure out what you want, you're most likely going to need to edit the file a little bit. Is the best part of the sound file 4 seconds into it? If so, you're likely not ever going to hear it whenever anyone calls you. It's best to cut out the beginning and start the file exactly where you want to start hearing the ringtone from. There are plenty of easy ways to do this. Try doing a quick Google search for audio editing software. Even better, try open source or free audio editing software. Most of these simple programs are easy to use. You'll need to open your file, cut out the intro (or possibly just select everything except the intro) and resave it to something your phone can use. Most phones nowadays handle mp3's quite well. Though, be careful not to use ones that are too annoying because lots of people hear your ringtone besides yourself.
I hope this little guide helped in some way. To recap, start off by realizing what bothers or annoys you and what types of things you enjoy hearing. Take your time and really put a lot of thought into what you want. Then find it online, cut it down, and upload to your phone! Good luck!
