I would like to address this to the newbies just getting started in the Internet Marketing business. It is very easy to suddenly find yourself swamped in information when you first start learning how to make money online. You have to learn how to set up a blog or website, there is plenty of software and techie stuff to master and then there is the SEO thing.
SEO scares the heck out of noobs because there is just so much information available that it can really overwhelm you. Well, what I intend to do with this article is break SEO down to its most basic form and take all of the complexity out of the equation.
First let me start by saying that the most critical factor in getting your blog to rank on page one in the results (known as the 'serps') is the amount and quality of links you get pointing to your site (I often use the words site and blog interchangeably). Links pointing to your site are called backlinks. The best kind of backlink to have is one that spells out your main keyword in the text of the link.
So if your blog is about 'ants' and you are targeting 'pest control Boston MA' then your backlinks should feature the words 'pest control' or 'pest control Boston' or perhaps even the whole string 'pest control Boston MA'. Every time you get a link to your site that 'anchors' your keyword in the text, it will help you climb higher and higher in the serps.
The quality of the link matters too. If a link comes from a page rank 3 site it wont give you as much juice as a link from a page rank 9 site. In fact, sometimes a single link from a very high page rank site is all you need to rank on the first page for your desired keyword! Although other factors do come into play namely, how much competition there is in your particular niche.
I want to keep this as basic as possible yet offer sound advice to you noobs out there. In light of that I can safely say that one of the best and most productive ways to spend your time promoting your site or blog, is to just get links. Get links and more links. Don't worry about all the details and just get links. A link is a link is a link. All links count and the more you have the better for you.
There are four basic method to get links. Commenting on blogs and leaving a link to your site is a very popular, easy and effective way to get links. It's slow but you can cherry pick some high page rank sites this way and get some sweet links if you look for them.
The second method is directory submissions. Submitting your blog or site to directories will get you a ton of one way links. I've seen sites ranking in the top spots that were largely promoted with directory submissions.
Third way to get links is with article submissions. You get to leave two or three links in the resource box. Articles are viral, meaning that other webmasters will download your articles from the article directories that you submit to. This of course produces even more links and over time it can really add up.
The fourth basic way to get links is from social bookmarking sites. There are lots of them out there. Some are major sites that are widely known and there are many more unknown sites called scuttle sites that you can use to get one way links from.
This can all be done manually but I use software to help automate the process to some degree. I use Comment Demon to find high page rank blogs, Bookmarking Demon to automatically create accounts at hundreds of social bookmarking sites, Article Submitter Platinum to auto submit my articles to a few hundred article directories and finally...I use Directory Submitter (by Brad Callen) to submit to directories.
This is how people get thousands of links to their site...with these basic tools of the trade.
So to wrap this one up let me just give you this advice -get links. Get more links. Don't worry about the links. Don't think about the links...just get links!
