Frankly, most problems big and small in a relationship can be avoided entirely by paying really close attention and respecting each other. When communication shuts down and you stop listening to one another, things can get hairy pretty fast. If you just devote your attention and time to your girlfriend, things should be pretty good...and on the rare occasion that a problem comes up, you'll be able to deal with it quickly and effectively.

If you're in the middle of what could end up as a breakup, it's important to spend that time with her and really listen. Whatever problems you're having, whatever it is you're doing or not doing, FIX IT as fast as possible! Don't take any chances with someone you love, make SURE she's happy with you. Even if it means making a few sacrifices for the good of the both of you, it's your job to make sure she's happy...and wouldn't you want her to be?
