Home Inspections Beyond Belief

This Real Estate Article is Brought To You By - Kevin Bilberry

Recently ThisOldHouse.com ran an article on "Home Inspection Nightmares". Some of the examples sited by the inspectors were beyond belief. It's difficult to comprehend how a home owner allows their home to get into such a state, let alone imagine trying to interest a buyer in purchasing it.

Here are a few of their worst nightmares:

Clutter to the point that cupboards are so full you can't see the plumbing, let alone inspect it.

A toilet attached to the floor with ground wire because the bolts are rusted off.

A 360-degree plumbing trap that formed a sort of traffic circle for waste on it's way out.

An active light switch installed on the INSIDE of a shower wall. The inspector couldn't ask the occupants about it, they were deceased.

A chimney flue pipe used to discharge furnace gases was directed into an upstairs bedroom as a heating source. That's one way to save on hydro.

One proud homeowner was bragging about hiding the main electrical panel behind a bathroom medicine cabinet.

A heater installed in the wall behind a towel rack. Perhaps it's just a fancy towel warmer.

One homeowner was looking for an alternate route for their phone cord from the basement to the attic in a two-story home. Their simple solution included drilling a hole through the flue that vents toxic gas from the furnace and sending the wire up and through.

Hand made roof trusses that were connected with hinges – great idea for a collapsible roof!

The problem of a dark shower stall was solved by installed a single light bulb right above the shower head.

Take an outdated electric heater and mount a woodstove on top and vent them together. All of this was sitting on highly combustible parquet flooring.

A newly designed bathtub and shower stall designed for multi-tasking. It contained a window, complete with curtains and wood shutters, an outlet installed in the shower along with a toilet paper dispenser.

To save on plumbing fittings, one homeowner heated PVC drain pipe with a torch to create his own 45-degree bend.

Don't you hate it when support columns are cut too short. No problem for this homeowner who had his propped up with bricks and metal pipe.

Just when you think there are no more new ways to use duct tape - this inspector found a leaky sewer vent stuffed with a dishtowel and held on with magical duct tape.

You can never have enough plugs in a bathroom as proven by this homeowner with a non-GFCI outlet with seven small hand appliances plugged into it.
