Before I got my secondary teaching job, I was able to go to Russia and teach English. I was actually quite lucky because I wasn't required to have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or English as a Second Language (ESL) certificate. Why didn't I need them? Because my particular program was a volunteer program. If you want your overseas teaching job to be more stable, it would be worth getting certified. There is a huge demand all around the world for ESL certified teachers and you will be able to land a job shortly after certification. Depending on the teaching position you want to get you will probably need a bachelors degree and certification in TEFL/ESL. With the right certifications you can go pretty much anywhere. There are a few things that you will want to consider before hopping on the plane. First of all, do you speak the language of the country that you will be living in? If not, you should do your best to become sufficient enough to get around. You will also want to study up on the culture. The food in your new home will probably be quite different from what you are used to eating now. Also, remember that the customs will be different as well so it may be hard to 'fit in' for quite a while. Do not be surprised if you go through a bit of culture shock when you arrive at your new teaching destination. Make sure to bring some comfort items from home that will help ease your culture shock a bit. You know what I particularly love about teaching jobs abroad? The great travel opportunities! If you have always dreamed about visiting a certain place, why not teach there? If you don't have your certification yet but are dying to go now, why not go with a volunteer program like the Peace Corps to test the waters? Also, your local college or university may also have a similar program.
