There are those would like us to think that there are those in the world who hate us for our freedom and that this is why we were attacked on 911. Some in positions of influence are working hard to take away our rights such as when Bush signed away our right to habeas corpus. Some go off to fight in the Middle East purportedly in the name of freedom. But that is inherently illogical… no country can enforce freedom with violence. Some are fighting to restore our freedom and there is a revolution in support of a presidential candidate, Dr Ron Paul, that has lit the fires of freedom for the first time since the American Revolution. One might ask then, what is freedom? And why all the fuss about freedom? Well freedom is all about being allowed to make choices. When one is inhibited from taking actions of their own choosing then that person is not free. When one feels subjected to the dictates of the State if they want to conduct themselves a certain way then they are to that degree not free. If one wants to support a particular religion and people chastise that person for their religious preferences that person feels their freedom is being suppressed. If it is true, as most religious persons believe, at the core of all of us is a spark of the divine, then it is no wonder why freedom is so important to people. Because if we are told we can not to think, act and believe as our innermost self desires, then we have been degraded as people and have been forced to disconnect from that divine spirit. Freedom to be and to choose and to make our own mistakes and to learn from them is at the core of our inner most selves. What is the relationship of liberty to high fossil fuel prices? One factor which impedes freedom is dependence. If an individual is dependent and relies too much on others then they are commensurately enslaved. And that describes our fuel economy.
