Another powerful reason to seek an online degree program is that a student can pursue his education at his or her own pace. Also, there are no requirements that mandate students to sign up for a certain number of credit hours per term. In many respects, online educational programs can be very similar to their more traditional counterparts. The degrees and curriculum that are offered online and off-line can be comparable in many ways and certainly create the same type of future earning power for the student with degree in hand. Federal financial aid is available at certain online college degree programs for students who qualify. Scholarships as well as student loans are also available in many cases. However, here is the rub: Not all online colleges and universities are created equal. Some of these online colleges provide worthless diplomas and are probably nothing more than diploma mills. There are no standards for quality educational practice and the diplomas that they issue are not recognized. Consequently, such diplomas will not open doors to future increased earning power. "Educational programs" of this nature do a great disservice to the online communityand create undue fear for those who may be considering the option of an online degree program. So how does one avoid such pitfalls? Very simply: by finding out if the educational institution is accredited. Colleges and universities, both online and off, are accredited when they meet certain standards of educational criteria. Such is a marker for ensuring the provision of quality degrees. Traditional brick and mortar colleges likewise submit to such standards. Some will be accredited and some will not be accredited. The same holds true in the online educational world: some will and some won't be accredited. The fact remains, standards of quality, be it in the real world or the cyber-world, are assured by accreditation. It would seem clear that online degree programs provide a good alternative for those who want to enhance their future earning power and do so without the restrictions of traditional education. Online degree programs cost a fraction of the traditional college classroom experience; there is greater flexibility and freedom regarding personal scheduling, and such education can be as accessible as sitting in front of one's home computer.
