Brett Favre Back for Another Season

This Football Article is Brought To You By - Jessica Vandelay

Favre recently made headlines when he retired earlier this year from football and shortly thereafter announced he made a mistake and would return for the next season.

Favre was born in Gulfport, MS and played college football at The University of Southern Mississippi for four years. In 1991 he was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. After one season with the Falcons the team traded him to the Green Bay Packers. He started as the Packers’ quarterback in the fourth game of the 1992 season and went on to start every game until his retirement.

A winning quarterback, Favre lead the Packers to two Super Bowl championships: a victory over the New England Patriots and a loss to the Denver Broncos. His excellent record includes the only player to receive three Associated Press Most Valuable Player awards (1995-1997), the most career touchdown passes (442), most career passing yards (61, 6555) and most consecutive starts for a quarterback (253 not including play-off starts) among many others.

In March 2008 Favre held a press conference and formally announced his retirement from football. Favre was very emotional, sobbing about his departure. The Packers announced their plan to retire Favre’s No. 4 jersey in honor of his success.

In July 2008 Favre upset the sports media and community when he announced he planned to return to football and then asked the NFL to reinstate him. Favre stated his retirement did come under pressure from the Packers and that it was much too early for him to leave, a rumor he previously denied. Favre requested the Packers re-evaluate his contract but Packers General Manager Ted Thompson announced he declined Favre’s unconditional release from the contract.

Sports magazines like ESPN The Magazine, Sports Illustrated and Pro Football weekly have stayed on top of the story reporting the Packers have already committed to Aaron Rodgers as their new quarterback and are not reconsidering Favre.

Currently ESPN The Magazine reports the Green Bay Packers have been unable to trade Favre and are TKing his arrival at training camp. The magazine reports the only step for the Packers to take may be one they’ve tried to avoid, which is sending Favre to a division rival like the Minnesota Vikings or the Chicago Bears. Another option for the Packers is to pay Favre a large (rumored at $20 million) over several years to stay retired.

The latest on Favre, announced in August 2008, is the Green Bay Packers traded him to the New York Jets. ESPN The Magazine reported the Packers had been in talks with the Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since deciding this week not to reinstate Favre to the Packers.

Outside of football, Favre is married to Deanna Tynes and is the father of two daughters. He established the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation in 1996 and supports charities in his home state of Mississippi and his adopted state of Wisconsin. In 1998 Favre made a cameo appearance in the hit comedy “There’s Something About Mary.”
