In the late 18th century Boston was at the center of many major history-making events during the American Revolution including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party as well as many now-famous battles like the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston. The conclusion of the American Revolution led to the Declaration of Independence.

Boston is also home to the Boston Latin School, the first public school in the U.S. and to the first American college, Harvard University in nearby Cambridge and continues to be a beacon of higher education today. The subway system, commonly known by Boston natives as the “T” is also the first of its kind in the U.S.

When visiting Boston, a great way to see everything historical and modern is to walk the Freedom Trail. This is the best thing to do in Boston to see both historical landmarks like Old North Church, King’s Chapel. Surrounding these great historical landmarks are the city’s best shopping, dining and business districts. Guided tours are available on the Freedom Trail but the historic places are all well-marked and have sufficient information for self-guided tours. This is something visitors can do leisurely or aggressively. The Trail is 2.5 miles and it’s marked throughout the city by red bricks in the sidewalk.
Boston is famous for its many tony neighborhoods including the Beacon Hill neighborhood. Located near Boston’s capitol building and is populated by many beautiful architecture styles including brownstones. Popular television shows like “Ally McBeal,” “Cheers” and “Boston Legal” have made Beacon Hill a famous neighborhood. For more Boston-themed TV shows check out entertainment magazines like Entertainment Weekly, Budget Travel and Conde Nast Traveler.

There are many different kinds to choose from in Boston. Boston cream pie, clam chowder and baked beans are some of the well-known local fare. Boston’s ethnic diversity creates a diverse variety of culinary choices. For instance, Boston’s North End is now the city’s “Little Italy.” It is a great place to get gelato, pizza and canolli.
