What is a contour water ski boom?
The key to learning your favorite water skiing is the proper use of a contour boom. By bending the boom around the windshield and wakeboard tower bases, it can be mounted so that the boom clamp can be mounted lower on the ski pylon. This allows for the proper adjusting of the height so that any water skier, slalom skier, wakeboarder, kneeboarder, or barefoot water skier can learn without falling by holding directly onto the contoured boom.
The reason why contour booms were invented was to accommodate the different ski pylons. Ski pylons are made from aircraft aluminum and built into the construction of the boat to create a solid pole to attach the ski rope to. This sturdy mounting surface doubles as a great place to add a contour water ski boom.
Although there are ski pylons that have a consistent diameter to them, many have been tapered in order to look more appealing. Although it looks good, this tapered area is useless for attaching a boom clamp. In order to have a safe area to mount the boom, the clamp has to be lower than the tapered area in order to be safe.
Never, never, never put a boom clamp on a tapered area of the ski pylon. This could result in the boom flying off of the ski pylon. The contour booms' design allows for the clamp can be attached closer to the floor of the boat. A properly mounted boom clamp must be an unmovable base for the rest of the boom.
Because of the contoured bends in the boom, the construction materials used are critical in order to make the boom safe for life. Because of the incredible demands that water skiing places on the boom, only the highest quality aircraft aluminum has been found to meet these demands.
Stress testing has shown that only the highest aircraft aluminum lasts the life of your boom. Your boom should life a lifetime. If a boom manufacturer does not use the best stock, you could be in for a huge disappointment. Never settle for anything but the best materials in your boom.
