Bathroom Safety Tips for Your Family

Often we say bathroom is a safety place, but sometimes it becomes a risky place for your family members especially with small children and old age people. Precautions should be taken during bathroom remodeling to avoid electrical shock injuries, wound due to slippery surfaces, burns, poisoning and danger of drowning.

Due to the frequent use of water on the floor surface of bathroom, it creates a slippery state which is liable to cause heavy fall often comes with a result of serious injury especially for small children and aging people. To reduce the chances of falling due to slickness of surface should be prevented by using Non skid bath mats in showers and tubs.

The non skid bath mats can lessen your chances of falling in the bathroom, but it is more advisable to keep your bathrooms dry. Better to use non skid mat with rubber base, because rubber backing mats prevent a lot from falling.

Grab Bar:

Grab bar takes a very important role in safety game. Not only used in hospitals, but you can use this in your own home too. Bathroom is the right place to use grab bars for better and extra securities to restrain your slippery steps due to the slickness of your bathroom floor space. Use the grab bars by bathtubs, showers and toilet. Properly placed and strongly attached grab bar can be a great safety support for the aging people in your home. You may take every safety step, but never forget to keep the bathroom floor surface dry.

Prevent your family from the risk of electric shock First have a look into your bathroom to see whether there is any danger of getting electrical shock injury. As parents it becomes your responsibility to check damaged electrical appliances, damage wiring & cords and plugs. If you find electrical equipments are damaged then try to repair or replace them immediately by some professional trained people rather than some untrained electrical people.

Avoid using few electrical appliances in the bathroom such as: dryers and radios. If you are using these then be sure your electrical items are not coming into water contact. Parents should train their children about the hazardous of electric shock and prevent them to use dryers, radios and computers where they might come into contact with water.

Help your child:

· Always try to be with your children during the time they use the sink or tub. Don’t let them do their own bath alone. During their bath it is advisable for the parents to stay closer to them so that you can touch them easily.
· Prevent your child from sharp objects such as razors, scissors, curling irons and hair dryers
· Use bathroom cabinets to lock all your medicines, cosmetics and cleaning items so that you child won’t be able reach them
· Place non slip mat on the floor surface
· Turn down your water heater to 120 deg F or 54 deg C. As you are looking for safe bath, it is recommended to use lower water temperature to mitigate the chances of scalding.
· Child proof tub and sink nubs are preferable for small children
· To prevent from the risk of scalding always run the cold taps earliest
· Poisonous things should be kept away of the small children, your baby may put these in to mouth.
· Install handrails and locks that open from the outside.
· Educate your child about the safe use of bathrooms. Try to teach your child again and again about stay seated in the bath tubs all the time.
