Think you're getting fast speeds with your DSL? Think they can compare with cable? Most people think they are getting speeds just like cable on their DSL when they really aren't. DSL is good, just not quite that good. Do you know how to check your upload and download speeds? Did you know there was a difference in uploads and downloads? Most likely you didn't.
You can check the homepage of your cable company or do a Google search and find hundreds of speed tests out there. Trying different ones at different times of the day will help you get a good idea of your actual speed. I like the one at the PCnineoneone site. It has a cool race car interface too, which makes running the test fun. In just a few seconds you will know if your internet is performing the way it is supposed to be. The test will check both download and upload speeds for you. If your internet speeds are not what they are supposed to be, this could indicate a problem somewhere along the line. A problem could be from the source itself or from your computer. Performing routine speed tests will help you stay on top of your internet's performance. Knowing there is a problem is the first step at determining whats going wrong and where. If its a speed issue then your internet provider will happily offer their tech support for troubleshooting the issue. If its an internal issue within your system there are many things you can do to figure out whats going on. If you find the problem is not with the cable company, start with unplugging your modem for 30 seconds to reboot it. Many times this will be all that you need to do to get your lightning fast internet back up and running properly. If that doesn't do the trick, try running a through scan for spyware and remove anything you might find. A fantastic free tool for this is AdAware.
