Did you know that one of the most active ingredients in the best anti-aging skin care products are antioxidants? It is true, although we may have considered that anti-oxidants are an important dietary supplement, used to slowing down the process of aging, while keeping our appearance healthy and youthful.
Antioxidants, which includes Catechin Polyphenols from green tea extracts and a fat-soluble Vitamin C called Ascorbyl Palmitate, have been used in anti-aging skin serums and creams as ingredients, but the most potent of the six leading antioxidants is Idebenone.
Idebenone received the highest score among the six leading antioxidants, of 95 out of a 100, in a research study from the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. They developed the very first set of procedures while comparing the effects and efficiency of antioxidants, to determine the prevention of free-radical skin-damage.
Idebenone is a synthetic analogue of a naturally-occurring enzyme called Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10). Co Q10 is an important antioxidant component of the lipid (fatty) membranes that surround all cells, as well as the lipid membranes surrounding the various organelles ("little organs"), such as mitochondria and microsomes, inside cells. It is cell energizer, which means it produces the required energy for cell reproduction.
Idebenone differs very significantly from the natural Coenzyme Q10 in one area. CoQ10 can change its purpose from that of anti-oxidizing to an auto-oxidizing process, while in a low oxygen or hypoxic condition. When this happens the auto-oxidation begins to produce free radicals very quickly which leads to body tissues undergoing damage. Idebenone has proven in studies of research that in such cases to prevent the damage of free radicals and their damaging effect on the body, as Idebenone will relatively maintain the ATP levels of a normal cells development.
In order to understand how Idebenone provides anti-aging benefits we must read about mitochondrial processes in cells. The mitochondrial power plants produce over 90% of all cellular ATP bioenergy. They are also generally the richest sites in Co Q10 (or Idebenone). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) allows mitochondria to reproduce themselves.
Our levels of mtDNA receive more damage as energy generation by the mitochondria become less and less effective as we age. Cells in the heart muscle, brain and skeleton are the most vulnerable to damage as mitochondrial energy is depleted due to aging and the regeneration of cells slow down. Consequently cells die and degenerative diseases develop over time.
Idebenone, therefore, provides an anti-aging effect here in several ways. Unlike Co Q10, even under the low oxygen conditions that may occur periodically over a lifetime, Idebenone will serve as a powerful mitochondrial free radical quencher, lessening the ever-increasing mtDNA damage that occurs with age. Idebenone will work even better than Co Q10 within the electron transport chain to keep energy production high, even under hypoxic conditions.
