Dumbwaiters: The Smart Solution
Do not be deceived by the term “dumbwaiter” for it does not refer to a human server who is stupid or speechless. But in some way, it is. The dumbwaiter we are talking about is actually not a person but a small elevator that is installed in a business facility or at home. It basically has the same functions of a vertical wheelchai... Advice On How To Do Basement Waterproofing

This Home Article is Brought To You By - Pete Bennett

Wet basements do not mean that houses or buildings are poorly built. There are even solid buildings that have had water problems in their basement foundations. Learning a few tips on how to do basement waterproofing can help one to get rid of those problems. Also, one can save some money because all the labor can be done without hiring other people.

What Causes Wet Basements?

Some foundations in some buildings are not reinforced with waterproof materials and this is one of the reasons that basements get wet or damp. Good waterproofing is needed to coat the foundations and the walls inside of a building basement as well as out. Waterproofing methods and materials are not as sophisticated as those found now and perhaps this is one reason that older buildings get wet basements. There are also some houses that are built next to lakes and rivers and so the land is also wet. In this case, it is even more important that waterproofing be done to the basement.

Knowing When To Waterproof

If you are building a new house or building then this is one of the first measures you should take when the foundation has been built. Waterproofing a basement efficiently when it is first built will ensure that it will last for a long time. This is also the best time to do basement waterproofing because it's much easier to get into small spaces before they are closed off due to constructions, such as corners and even areas where drainage pipes will be installed.

Waterproofing Old Houses

If you are the owner of a fairly old house, the first thing you will want to do is inspect the basement walls. You will also need to look at the areas where drainage pipes have been installed. If you need to re-waterproof the walls and floors then you will need to use a multi-layer membrane system that will require you to epoxy the cracks in the basement and also outside around the floor area of the house. You can also use impervious hot tar to seal up cracks in and outside of the basement walls. If you see that there is no improvement with the basement condition, then that is the time when you can call for the advice of experts. Otherwise, you can do this by yourself or with the help of friends.

The Outside

Another way on how to do basement waterproofing is to work around the exterior of the walls. Use a system that will intercept water when it collects around your basement area. You can do this by making a channel like system that will redirect water to flow out and farther away from your house and basement. You can also guide the water to a sump that can be pumped up later.

Rebuilding

One other way to do basement waterproofing is to rebuild the basement of your house. Of course, this does not mean that you have to destroy the foundations of the house. All you need to do is reinforce the walls completely with a layer of cement and hot tar where it is needed. This will not only help keep the basement dry but will strengthen the foundation of the house. Also, if there are any busted pipes, you will need to replace them with new fittings.

Products One Can Use

How to do basement waterproofing means knowing what tools to use. The older way is to use cement and tar. Tar can be used to cover cracks and therefore makes walls and the floor impervious. There are also epoxies available on the market that cost a pretty penny. Although they are not as effective, these epoxies present a technology that can well improve over time. The epoxy can be injected into cracks in walls to repair cracks but this is something that, again, can cost one a lot of money.

Waterproofing a basement is actually very important for a house. A house that is 20 to 25 years old has to have its basement inspected for leaks. A damp basement is an indication that there is water seeping from a place that needs to be sealed up again. Remember that it's important to know how to do basement waterproofing just as it is to know when to do it.
