ADVENTURE TRAVELING-FOR CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR

White Christmas?
Whether or not we believe in Christmas, snow is an unfamiliar thrill for most of us. Perennial ‘snow points’ like the Rohtang Pass offer stale patches of the stuff even in summer, but to experience a snowfall you’ll either have to climb a peak or wait for winter. In the right place. Last January saw a relatively heavy snowfall in Himachal; even Kasauli received snow for the first time in five years. But to maximise your chances, stick to Kufrt, Sarahan, and Manali. January is the most promising month but a good weatherman makes no promises. If all else fails, head up the Solang Valley from Manali and keep going until the snow stops you.

Year-end in Bhutan
New Year in Nainital? We think not. For a more enchanted eve, try Bhutan. If you can get to Paro by December 22 you’ll be in time to catch all the pageantry of the Trongsa Tsechu on Christmas Day. The annual festival focuses on the spectacular 17th century dzong, a monastic fortress that dominates this little town in central Bhutan. The nearby Bumthang valley is also worth exploring. For New Year’s eve make it back to Thimpu if you want parties, or head for the charming Kichu Wangdue resort in Wangduephodrang for quiet comfort.

Marine Park, Pirotan lsland

The country’s first Marine National Park (458 sq km) in the Gulf of kutch, 30 km Jamnagar, the coral reefs are filled with octopus, sea hare and mollusks, echinoderms like the star fish, brittle star, sand dollar, sea urchin and sea cucumber. You’ll see dolphins and the seal- like dugong. The dense mangroves are home to thousands of birds. Pirotan lsland also hosts nature education camps for school children.
