A Guide To Buying A T-shirt Quilt

This Arts Article is Brought To You By - Sara Musfeldt

A t-shirt quilt is a wonderful keepsake. It can last a lifetime when the best materials are used, and it is made correctly. Inexpensive, custom t-shirt quilts are sold by many online companies. Inexpensive isn't bad, necessarily. Your quilt will break down over time if cheap materials are used or the technique it poor. Before you buy, however, it is important that you ask your t-shirt quilt provider these questions. The questions you should ask are:

Q. Will my quilt be custom-made?

While decent t-shirt quilts are offered at fair prices online, they aren't necessarily "custom." Usually the colors, patterns, and arrangement are very similar. A t-shirt quilt is created so that you have an heirloom to pass down, so it is important that it be truly custom-made.

Q. Do you use cotton or polyester batting?

Polyester batting is inferior to cotton; it doesn't breathe and can substantially degrade over time. Although cotton batting is more expensive, it is more comfortable for everyday use and lasts longer. Another reason cotton batting is better than polyester is that cotton batted quilts hang flatter and more beautifully against a wall. If a quilt doesn't come with batting at all, which some do, it is not really a quilt.

Q. Are the t-shirts separated with sashing?

If you're having a t-shirt quilt made, make sure that your quilter uses sashing (a ribbon of fabric between t-shirt squares) to separate your t-shirts from one another. Sashing will help your t-shirt quilt to last longer as well as enhance the design.

Q. How is the quilt built? Do you bind you or "flip and quilt"?

The "flip and quilt" or "flip and sew" method is older and less time-consuming. Although it is less expensive, the quilt usually won't hang or lay completely flat. If the more time-consuming bind method is used, the finished product will lay or hang flatter and will look better.

Q. What are the fabric's thread weight and thread count?

When the best fabrics are used, a quilt should last decades. The best fabrics have a thread count of 75. Ask your quilter what thread count fabric they will be using. In addition, check to make sure that fabric with a thread weight of 30-34 will be used. If at all possible, look at the fabric and examine the sharpness of the printing. If the fabric is inexpensive, the printing will be blurry and inconsistent and will degrade over time.
