One of the largest Greek Islands which is also one of the prime Ionian Islands is Kefalonia found on the west side of the Greek mainland . An unknown fact is that Kefalonia can be spelt in various ways and some of these ways include Cephallonia, Kefallonia and Cephalonia. According to popular belief it is said to be named after Cephalus, a character from Greek Mythology and was the founding head of a great family.

Kefalonia is a breathtaking island with mountain ranges, deep caves and vegetation. It is also steeped in history. All the Ionian Islands which included Kefalonia were united back with Greece in 1864 after spending hundreds of years being passed from diverse leaderships such as Roman ruling and Norman ruling.

1953 for any inhabitant of the island will be remembered as a time when a progression of disastrous earthquakes hit the island, one of them hitting 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake ruined a large amount of homes and resulted in billions of drachmas in damages, and at least 80% of the 125,000 strong population decided to leave the island for a fresh start on other nearby islands. Evidence can be seen all across the island of Kefalonia of the great earthquake, this can be from ruined buildings to uneven cracked surfaces that crumbled buildings and structures.

During the summer periods, known as the peak periods Kefalonia gets its fair share of tourists from various places around the world mainly of English and Italian holidaymakers and this has been improved since the release of a film that was filmed on the island of Kefalonia in 2001.

Lassi is arguably the most popular resort on the island with its lively atmosphere that is ideal for all kinds of holidaymakers. With restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets lining both sides of the main coastal road so you won’t get bored. In the day time there are water sports, sweeping sandy beaches, and quiet sheltered coves for you to spend your relaxing holiday at.

Lassi consists of the most eye catching beaches on the island. With unusual rocky cliffs and stunning bays Kefalonia is a great place for those who want scenery and relaxation on their holidays . If you are engrossed in exploring Kefalonia, there are many boat trips and cruises that can take you to significant hotspots and places of interest.
