It seems like getting rid of your acne should be the end of the story. But, for many who have suffered from this condition, healing acne scars left behind is now their main concern.
Some acne scars will diminish over time, and eventually disappear altogether. But some scarring is permanent, and won't go away on its own. If that's the case for you, it might take more drastic measures to deal with your problem.
Here are some of the most common treatments used to treat the scarring acne can leave behind.
Soft Tissue Fillers
How do you feel about needles? Well, with this technique, and injections are made under the skin, and scars are filled with either collagen, or excess fat that's been retrieved from another part of your body. The result is less noticeable acne scars for about 6 to 12 weeks. Then, you might choose to have the treatment again.
On average, collagen injections cost about $300 to $400 per session. The average cost of fat injections is about $1,000.
Microdermabrasion
A microdermabrasion treatment removes surface skin cells. Think of it as buffing the skin. The results of these treatments can be less visible acne scars.
You might need several treatments to get the result you want. But microdermabrasion treatments are fast, usually taking less than an hour. And there is little, if any, pain involved.
Microdermabrasion treatments cost around $200 to $300 each.
Dermabrasion
During the dermabrasion procedure, a rotating wire brush is used to remove the top layer of your skin. It also removes surface acne scars, and makes deeper acne scars less visible and noticeable.
Because it's among the more drastic procedures, dermabrasion is usually only performed on those with pretty severe acne scarring.
Dermabrasion can cost between $1,000 and $1,500. And some patients will require several treatments before they achieve the results they want.
Laser Resurfacing
With laser resurfacing, the outer layer of the skin is destroyed by a laser beam. The laser also heats the layer of skin underneath. As that layer of skin heals, new skin forms. The result is fewer, and less noticeable, scars.
Laser resurfacing can cost between $2,000 and $2,500.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels can sometimes make mild acne scarring less noticeable.
During a chemical peel, a product that contains acid will be applied to your skin. When it is removed, the dead upper layers of skin will also be lifted away.
Each chemical peel treatment will cost between $100 and $300. And you might need 3 to 6 treatments to get the desired results.
When it comes to healing acne scars, you have many treatment options. What you choose will depend on the severity of scarring, how much recovery time you are willing to deal with, and how much you are ready to pay.
